Near Miss for TAB Race Meeting

It was a near thing but Lismore managed to complete its TAB meeting last Monday week on a sodden race track because of the thick grass cover. The track was rated a heavy nine for the first race but rain then swept across the course and it was down graded to a heavy 10.

Stewards and senior riders inspected the track and deemed it safe and the meeting continued.

"The excellent grass cover saved the day," club secretary, Michael Timbrell, said.
"It held the track together and while it was heavy it was safe and we had no incidents. Our curator, Lesleigh Leisha, has done a fantastic job. She has tried several new ideas and they are all working."

Chief steward Bill Fanning and leading jockey Darron Coleman both agreed the meeting was able to proceed because of the grass cover. "It was an excellent cover and saved the meeting," Fanning said. "That was not the heaviest track I have officiated at but it rates up near the top."

Coleman said it was one of the heaviest he had ridden on. "The grass cover was brilliant which meant we all got through it safely," he said.

LISMORE HISTORY

Another chapter was written in racing history at the meeting at Lismore last Saturday (June 21).
Seventeen year old apprentice Matthew Chadwick arrived at the meeting with one win from 21 rides to his credit and a 4kg claim.
He finished the meeting with four winners on the five event program and his claim down to 3kgs.
It is believed to be the first time a 4kg claiming apprentice has ridden that many winners on the one day.
Chadwick arrived from Hong Kong earlier in the year on loan to Gold Coast trainer Mary-Ann Thexton.
He was granted a licence to ride in races on May 17 but was not allowed to ride at the Gold Coast until he had ridden in 10 races at country tracks.
Thexton rarely sends horses to the country so she packed Chadwick off to Brett Bellamy at Coffs Harbour.
Chadwick arrived with one win, at Beaudesert, to his name.
He had three rides when he arrived at Lismore on Glenarvon Boy, Horsetails and Kazak Flyer and picked up the ride on Tommy Rainbowhorse.
All four won with Kazak Flyer taking the feature, the Kyogle Cup.
“That was a great day,” Chadwick said.
“I rang my parents in Hong Kong and they were really excited for me but wanted to know where Kyogle was.”
Chadwick is of Chinese origin and was given up for adoption at three months of age when his natural parents could not afford to keep him because their family was too large.
He was adopted by an English couple living in Hong Kong, both school teachers.
“Mum teaches while Dad is a headmaster,” Chadwick said.
“I was doing well at school but we used to ride as a family and I loved it.
“Hong Kong Jockey Club advertised for apprentices so I applied and was accepted.
“Mum and Dad said if that was what I wanted to do they would support me.”
Chadwick rode track work before being sent to Australia for the next stage of his education.
He will be remaining with Bellamy until after the Coffs Harbour carnival then will return to Thexton but is due back in Hong Kong after Christmas where he will link with trainer Tony Cruz, the man who trained Silent Witness.

STABLES TO LEASE - LISMORE RACE COURSE

The Lismore Turf Club is inviting expressions of interest from licensed trainers to lease stables located on the racecourse grounds.

A total of 4 secure stable complexes are available, each with the capacity to house a maximum of 6 horses. Each complex also has a minimum of 1 feed / gear room plus 2 day yards. The complexes have been configured so that the opportunity exists for a trainer to lease more than one block and have easy access to all boxes leased.

LATEST RACING STORIES

A major renovation of the stabling complex at Lismore race course is only weeks away from completion.

Trainers had to move out while the roof was replaced and the stables divided in to four blocks of six boxes each.

Each block, which will have two days yards, will be secured with its own fencing.
New lease agreements are being drawn up with no guarantee existing trainers will automatically be offered a block.

“They will be invited to apply but we are also interested in hearing from other trainers who might be looking for secure stables in a quiet environment with good training facilities,” the club’s secretary-manager, Michael Timbrell, said.
“Any trainer interested in a lease must take a block of six boxes.”

Changes have been made to the racing schedule at Lismore.

The non TAB meeting scheduled for February 16 has been moved to June 21 while the non TAB meeting originally set down for Saturday, March 1 has been moved back a day to this Sunday, March 2 and becomes a TAB meeting.

The meeting in June fills a two week gap leading up to the start of the Grafton carnival.

CARAEL BOY ON THE WAY BACK

Bob Milligan reckons there is some life left in the old boy yet and he’s talking about his 10 year old iron galloper Carael Boy.

“I think there are more feature wins in him,” Milligan said.

The horse is off north on Saturday in a bid to add the Lismore cup to his impressive portfolio.

The Lismore meeting, to be covered by the TAB, was originally set down for September but switched to Saturday because of EI and to coincide with the return to racing at Randwick.

Milligan is upbeat about the horse’s chance in the cup.

“His work has been fantastic and his track work rider reckons he feels like a three year old,” the Taree based Milligan said.

“This is the first time we have not had problems with his front foot.

“I am sure he would have won a lot more races if it had not been for that.

“I don’t know how but suddenly the problem has rectified itself and you can see the change in the horse.”

Carael Boy, getting close to the magic million dollar mark in prize money ($964,169), broke back into the winners circle at Taree last Saturday.

He was ridden by Milligan’s talented apprentice Vicki Schubert who retains the ride in the Lismore cup.

“I was very impressed with the way the horse won and the way Vicki rode him,” Milligan said.

“And it was the first time in his career he has raced without that front foot being bandaged.

“It’s like he has been given a new lease of life.

“Finally he is also getting down in the weights to a level which he can win at again.

“I thing he is fairly weighted in the Lismore cup with 57kgs and Vicki’s claim 2kg claim will help further.”

Prior to last Saturday Carael Boy, one of the most versatile of gallopers, scored his first win in 15 months.

His previous win has been over 2000 metres at Randwick in August last year. His record of 20 wins boasts an impressive list at distances from 1200 metres to 2400 metres including the 2005 Wyong cup (2100m), dead heating with High Cee in the 2005 Newcastle cup (2400m), the 2005 Winter Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill, the 2004 Liverpool City Cup (1200m) at Warwick Farm, the 2002 BTC Sprint (1350m) at Doomben, the 2001 Villiers (1600m) at Randwick and the 2001 Hawkesbury Cup (1600m).

Milligan said Carael Boy would be back racing in Sydney just as soon as the quarantine restrictions are lifted.

“I was not going to take him to Randwick on Saturday and have to leave to him there for two weeks,” Milligan said.

“Lismore was a nice alternative.”

The Lismore cup top weight Precise Timing (Robert Thompson) will also be back in Sydney when restrictions are lifted with trainer Ross Stitt abandoning his plan to take the horse to Tasmania in a bid to win another Launceston cup.

“He would have to go into quarantine before he left and again when he got to Tasmania,” Stitt said.

“We would loose too much time.”

Precise Timing and Thompson won the Lismore cup last year but Stitt is worried about the cup being reduced this year from 2100 metres to 1516 metres because of the interruptions to training.

SAFFIR SIMPSON

What’s in a name. Not much really when it comes to race horses. They can either gallop or they can’t.

Six months ago Murwillumbah trainer Grant Marshall went looking for a horse to win Lismore’s Ireland Honda Big Maiden, to be run this Saturday.

He believed he had found the horse in the former Gai Waterhouse trained two year old called Saffir Simpson.

“I thought it was one of the worst names I had come across but this horse had already proved he could gallop so it didn’t really matter,” Marshall said.

“He is not a big horse but is beautifully bred.

“This horse cost a lot as a yearling and I am not going to tell you how much I paid for him.

“But I think he has a big future and after Lismore his racing will be restricted to Sydney and Brisbane.

“In fact, I was going to miss Lismore and take him straight to Randwick this weekend but the quarantine restrictions mean he would have had to stay down there for two weeks.

“I bought him for the big maiden so we will stick to the original plan.
“That was when it was going to be run in September and was worth $25,000 with a $10,000 BOBS bonus.

“Now its worth half that and it’s not the clubs fault.
“It’s all come about because of EI.”

Saffir Simpson is by Australia’s former international sprint star Choisir from the Thunder Gulch mare Thunderstorms and is closely related on the dam’s side to the former top class mare Bounding Away.

He won trials at Randwick and Rosehill in November and December last year before going to the races twice for a second at Rosehill and a third at Canterbury.

Saffir Simpson was spelled and after winning another Rosehill trial resumed for thirds and fifths at Canterbury before being sold.

“My understanding is Gai wanted to keep him but the owner was seriously ill and was selling off all his horses,” Marshall said.

After Marshall got the horse home the name still puzzled him and he did some research.

Then it all made sense.

“There is a thing called the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale, developed by Dr Saffir and Dr Simpson which is used to measure high intensity tropical storms,” Marshall said.

“Saffir Simpson’s dam is Thunderstorms hence the name but I still don’t like it.”

Lismore Cup

Monday 26/11/2007

Take a look at the field as it goes on to the track for the XXXX Gold Lismore cup next Saturday. Not the horses. The jockeys.

There could be a future Melbourne cup winner among them.

Four jockeys, Glen Boss, Chris Munce, Scott Seamer and Michael Rodd have won the Lismore cup and later go on and won the Melbourne cup.

Boss won the 1992 Lismore cup on Charlie Mac and of course went on to win three successive Melbourne cups on Makybe Diva.

Munce’s Lismore cup was won on Seattle Gleam in 1994 and he followed that up four years later by winning the Melbourne cup on Jezabeel.

Scott Seamer won the 2000 Lismore cup on Mougi and the following year achieved the pinnacle of his career by winning the Caulfield Cup-Melbourne cup double on Ethereal.

Michael Rodd was an apprentice when he rode Kahoolawe to victory in the 2001 Lismore cup for now retired Ballina trainer Neville Galvin.

This year, of course, Rodd stormed down the outside on Efficient to win the Melbourne cup.

***

In the past 31 years only three jockeys have ridden more than one Lismore cup winner.

Graham Cook, Glen Colless and Robert Thompson have two each but there is a chance Thompson could go one better next Saturday and make it a treble.

Thompson won last year’s cup on Precise Timing and trainer Ross Stitt intends starting the horse next Saturday with Thompson the likely rider.

Thompson’s other Lismore cup was aboard Our Eeyore in 2003.

Colless won the cup in 1995 on Falcon’s Domain for Trevor Hardy and in 2004 on Arena Valadora for Ballina trainer John Everson.

Cook, now retired, won his two cups on Donandi in 1979 and Set Menu in 1991.

***

The first five placegetters in the Carlton Ballina cup are likely to clash in next Saturday’s XXXX Gold Lismore cup.

Ballina trainer Stephen Lee has nominated Ballina cup winner Felix Trinididad along with Song Time (fifth) and Lost Weekend (eighth).

Port Macquarie trainer Pat Quinn, who finished second and third at Ballina with St Tevoc and Best View, has nominated those two horses for Lismore and assured the club both would run.

And the Danny Bowen trained Special Voyage, which did a great job to run fourth under 59kgs at Ballina after being trapped wide for much of the trip, has also been declared a starter at Lismore.

***

Lismore Turf Club is warning young race goers to remember their ID before they leave home for next Saturday’s cup meeting.

“Unless you can produce your ID if asked then you don’t get in the gate,” club secretary, Michael Timbrell, said.

“It is a licensed area, licensing laws apply and police will be watching closely.
“Anyone under 18 must be with a parent and stay with them at all times.
“A friend or relative is not acceptable.”

LISMORE CUP NOMINATIONS

Two of country racing’s best performed and most durable gallopers, Carael Boy and Precise Timing, are set to clash in the $20,000 XXXX Gold Lismore Cup (1516m) on Saturday.

They are among the 21 cup nominations drawn from throughout the Northern Rivers and mid North Coast. Ross Stitt has already declared that Precise Timing will start in a bid to win his second successive Lismore cup.

Robert Thompson, who won on the horse last year, will ride him again this
Saturday after turning down offers to ride at Randwick.

“I just wish the cup was still 2100 metres and not 1516 metres,” Stitt said.
“It is going to make it a lot harder for him but we would love to win a second cup.

“He is an eight year old and this might be our last chance.”

A win in the cup would also ease the pain that Stitt experienced when another of his horses, Igotthelastone, broke down at Taree last Saturday. The horse has been saved but may never race again.

Carael Boy’s trainer, Bob Milligan, will decide after weights are issued whether to start the horse but is leaning towards send him north from his Taree base. The horse broke back into the winners circle at Taree last Saturday edging him a little closer to $1 million in prize money.

Carael Boy’s earnings now stand at $964,169 and the $13,000 first prize money for the cup, if he won, would take him to $977,169.

A total of 176 horses have been nominated for the seven race program, down just two on last year’s eight race cup meeting which was run in September.
That includes 33 in the $12,000 Ireland Honda Big Maiden (1200m) and 14 in the Lismore Workers Club Rousillon Hcp.

Nominations for the Rousillon have been extended to this morning and Milligan has already taken advantage of that to nominate his talented sprinter Centre Fire.

This year’s cup has had to be moved to this Saturday because of EI and at one stage it appeared Lismore might not have a cup at all.

Prize money has had to be reduced at the insistence of Racing NSW and the distance of the cup brought back from 2100 metres because of the interference to training schedules.

The meeting is also restricted to horses from only two areas, again because of EI. Despite that Lismore Turf Club officials were upbeat about the quality of the cup and the number of horses nominated for the meeting.

“This is only two less than last year and horses from Queensland and other parts of NSW have been excluded because of EI,” the club’s secretary/manager, Michael Timbrell said. “We are headed towards a bumper day of racing.”

There is every possibility the program may have to be extended from seven races to at least eight and possibly nine.

“We will wait until after acceptances are declared before we make any decisions about dividing races but funding is available from Racing NSW,” Timbrell said.

LISMORE CUP TO GO AHEAD!!

The Lismore Turf Club is excited to announce that, after intense lobbying to Racing NSW, the Lismore Cup will go ahead – with one difference.

The XXXX Gold Lismore Cup will be held on a Saturday for the first time – Saturday 1st December. The meeting will feature 7 races and full TAB and Sky Channel coverage and will coincide with the first race meeting being held in Sydney since the shutdown due to Equine Influenza.

“The racing program and prizemoney levels are still to be finalised, but we wanted to let the people of Lismore know as early as possible so they can start planning ahead” said Michael Timbrell Secretary/Manager of the Lismore Turf Club.

“We would like to thank Racing NSW for the opportunity to re-schedule the Lismore Cup during these very difficult times”.

Chairman Ron Marriott said “We have worked extremely hard over the last 2 months, in very trying circumstances, to ensure that Lismore did not miss out on the 2007 Lismore Cup. It is now up to the business community and citizens of Lismore to get behind this re-scheduled date to justify our hard work and perseverance.”

“ We have to show the racing authorities that their show of faith in our Cup meeting is not misguided. With the return of Sydney racing at Randwick on the same day, all eyes will be on racing during that afternoon, and this is our chance to showcase the Lismore Cup to the nation”. he said.

Lismore City Council Mayor, Merv King said he was thrilled to hear that the Lismore Cup race day will go ahead, albeit a little later in the year.

He said, “Lismore Cup Race Day is an important occasion in the local social calendar and we would encourage locals to get behind the Lismore Turf Club and support this event.”

“It’s a great day out, lots of fun, and an enjoyable social event not to be missed. I would ask our local community to support the Lismore Cup Race Day; come along and have a good time.”

Further information about the Lismore Cup will be released in coming weeks as arrangements for the re-scheduled event are finalised. The 2008 Centenary Lismore Cup will be held at its normal time in late September next year

LISMORE CUP CARNIVAL POSTPONED

A special meeting of the Board of Directors of the Lismore Turf Club has decided that due to the uncertainty surrounding the future of racing in the coming weeks to postpone the 2007 Lismore Cup Carnival.

This means that both the Lismore Workers Club Rousillon Handicap Raceday on Sunday September 23 and the XXXX Gold Lismore Cup Day on Thursday September 27 will not be held as scheduled.

The club has asked Lismore City Council to cancel the local half-day holiday for cup day. The club is currently in negotiations with Racing NSW to try and secure another date in late November to hold the Lismore Cup and will seek assistance from Council to have a local half-day holiday gazetted for that day.

“Although the Lismore Cup is still three weeks away, the advice we have been receiving from Racing NSW is that we had little or no chance of being able to run a normal race day with a crowd in attendance,” the chairman of Lismore Turf Club, Ron Marriott, said.

“We understand this is a huge blow for the Lismore community, including numerous businesses that benefit from the running of the Lismore Cup.
However in the interests of all concerned, including sponsors, supporters, businesses and the racing community, we thought it best to make this decision now.”

“Assuming that the racing industry recovers sufficiently by November, we plan on holding the Lismore Cup towards the end of that month and I urge all businesses that were to be involved with the Cup in September to stay with us and support the new date when it is announced. If that happens the impact on the Lismore Business Community should be kept to a minimum.”

Owners and trainers should note that the program for the new date, including race distances, classes and prize money is still being discussed and will be announced when a new date is confirmed.

LONG HAUL FOR CONNECTIONS OF SUPER FRIEND

Who could deny Toowoomba trainer Kath Carroll and her father Dan their moment of glory if they win the Truckies Long Haul (3000m) at Lismore tomorrow (Saturday) with top weight, Super Friend?

Neither will be at Lismore to see the race simply because they are both too ill to travel.

Super Friend is being brought to Lismore by his strapper, Paul Sutton and will be put in the care of a local trainer for the day.

“Dad bred the horse but he is 78 and not very well at all,” Kath Carroll said.
“I had an operation several years ago that went wrong and I ended up very ill.
“I contracted peritonitis and now my intestines are paralysed.

“Every day is a struggle but it is the horses that get me out of bed every morning.

“Unfortunately neither of us can travel very far so a trip to Lismore is out of the question.”

Carroll said Lismore Turf Club should be congratulated for programming a 3000 metre race with decent prize money.

“I have been searching for a race like this for Super Friend for ages,” Carroll said.

“He is a very sound horse and will just keep going and going.
“If he wins this race I will get him home and school him over the jumps.
“I think he would have a future in Victoria as a hurdler.
“I would take him to the point where he is ready to race over the jumps then send him to a trainer down there.”

LISM0RE CATERING FOR ALL STAYERS

Tomorrow’s (Saturday) Lismore meeting is catering for established stayers as well as future stayers.

Apart from the Truckies Long Haul over 3000 metres there is also the Endeavour Logistics Maiden (2000m) and the Sharon Pepper trained Timeless Cowboy, to be ridden by Darron Coleman, certainly looks a stayer in the making.

Two starts back at Grafton he was beaten only 2.1 lengths behind Pride of Pins in a class four over 2100 metres then ran eighth over 2030 metres at Doomben in class record time.

“The horse will go for a spell after today,” Pepper said.

“He is a lovely big, strong horse for a three year old and once he fills out he is going to develop into a really nice type.

“I think we are going to have a lot of fun with him as a four year old.”

There is obviously a need for middle distance races for maidens and trainers are obviously prepared to travel when they find one.

This race has attracted horses from Goondiwindi, Inverell, Beaudesert and Port Macquarie as well as locally.

That’s a very good effort for a non TAB meeting.

LEAVE YOUR WHIP BEHIND, DARRON

Racegoers at Lismore tomorrow (Saturday) need not look for Darron Coleman to be reaching for whip on Tuskegee in the feature race, the Truckies Long Haul (3000m).

He probably won’t even bother to take it with him.

Trainer John Everson has been tearing out what is left of his hair trying to work out a strategy to get Tuskegee to hit the line at the end of his races.

“We had been using the stick on him and it did not make any difference,” Everson said.

“Three starts back I took him to the Gold Coast and asked Luke Rolls not to use the stick and the horse hit the line really well.

“Peter Graham rode him at his last two starts at Grafton and did not use the whip either time and the improvement has been remarkable.”

At those last two starts, both over 2100 metres, Tuskegee ran third to Sam Sung Blue and fifth, beaten only 1.7 lengths, behind Pride of Pins.

In fact when Graham returned on the horse after his last start he told Everson the horse needed much further.

“‘He did not know that I have had this race in mind for the last couple of months,” Everson said.

Today’s Truckies Long Haul, which has drawn a field of nine, is the second longest race in country Australia.

BIG NOMINATIONS FOR SATURDAY

Turf Cub officials are delighted with nominations for Saturday’s meeting which will feature the Truckies Long Haul over 3000 metres.

Eighty horses have been nominated for the five races including 13 for the Long Haul from stables south to Port Macquarie, north to the Gold Coast and inland to Bingara and Toowoomba.

“This justifies out decision to increase prize money to $6000,” club secretary, Michael Timbrell, said.

The Truckies Long Haul, the second longest race in country Australia, was run for the first time last year.

The other stallion being offered by Woodwinds Farm is the beautifully bred freshman stallion Tanabota (Redoute’s Choice-Midnight Renegade by Brigand.).
Tanabota had only three starts in 2005 for an easy maiden win on debut at Geelong and fourths at Sandown and Flemington before suffering a transport injury and being retired.

His service will go to connections of the winner of the $10,000 Neville Farmer Memorial Class Four (1300m).

HORSES FROM EVERYWHERE FOR TRUCKIES LONG HAUL

Three horses, two from Queensland one from the Tablelands, have already been nominated for Lismore’s $6000 Truckies Long Haul over 3000 metres next Saturday, July 28.

The Truckies Long Haul is the second longest race in country Australia.

Toowoomba trainer Kath Carroll has nominated Super Friend and Yield Curve while Sue Bigg from Bingara has nominated Up ‘N’ Under.

Yield Curve easily won over 2200 metres at the Gold Coast three starts back and then ran third over the same distance there at his last start.

Three starts back Super Friend ran third in the Gatton Cup over 2000 metres.

Up ‘N’ Under will certainly be fit for the race.
His last five starts have been over distances longer than 2000 metres and he was beaten only 1.3 lengths when fourth over 2100 metres on South Grafton cup day.

Prizemoney for the XXXX Gold Lismore Cup (2100m) on Thursday, 27th September has been increased to $50,000.

Lismore Turf Club's committee wants to lift the profile of the cup, hence the prizemoney increase. "We hope that by going to $50,000 we can consistently attract good quality horses," club secretary, Michael Timbrell, said. "The profile of the cup was lifted enormously last year by Precise Timing winning but there was no guarantee we would get a horse like Precise Timing each year unless we made the prizemoney more attractive."
